NEW - ALL WEEKEND - 'ADVENTURE BITES' LOOP, STUDIO THEATRE


An hour-long, family friendly loop of 10 action-packed, short adventure sports films showing all day Saturday and Sunday.  Screening in 93 seater Studio Theatre next to Main Theatre in the Pavilion Arts Centre with individual wireless headphones, you are guaranteed a great audio-visual experience and you can turn up at any point without disturbing anyone else's enjoyment.  A ticket gains you entry once, but you can stay as long as you like. If you arrive part way through the loop you can simply watch until the loop finishes and continue watching the next loop until you catch up!  Simple.  (£4 for adults, £2 for students and under 16s).

Main Theatre sessions are £10 for adults (£5 for students/children) or £25 for 3 (£12.50 for students/children) or a family ticket is £20.
 

10.30am Young Adventurers Extreme Mountain Biking
followed by ShAFF Young Adventurers Films 1


Multiple British trials bike champion Danny Butler travels the country with his Extreme Mountain Bike Show demonstrating his team's hair-raising skills on two wheels.  One of his intrepid team of top stunt mountain-bikers will be bringing their bike along to Buxton to show off their tricks.  


Following our Extreme Mountain Biking demo we'll show a series of the best films from the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival's sell-out Young Adventurers' screening.  (The speakers and films have been selected mainly with primary school age in mind but we're confident that they will also be enjoyed by older children and adults too).  
 

12.30pm CHRIS TOWNSEND: Hill Walking Going Long & Staying Strong
followed by Crossing the Ice


British Mountain Club Hill Walking Officer Carey Davies in conversation with Chris Townsend - outdoor writer and photographer and one of the world's most prolific long-distance walkers.  Chris's walks include the 3,100-mile Continental Divide Trail and the first ever continuous walk of the 517 Scottish Munros.


100 years after Scott and Amundsen’s tragic race to the South Pole, two Australian adventurers James Castrission and Justin Jones (Cas and Jonesy) tackle one of the last great Antarctic odysseys – getting to the pole and back completely unassisted.  But on the way out they discover there’s a Norwegian on the ice – and he’s got a head start.  (Winner of 2013 Sheffield Adventure Film Festival Best Feature Film, Banff Mountain Film Festival Grand Prize and Kendal Mountain Festival Grand Prize).
 

3pm  British Mountain Guides: Passion & Professionalism on the Peaks
followed by This is My Winter


Three talks compered by fellow guide James Thacker with an audience Q&A.

Big mountain snowboard legend Xavier de la Rue is stuck.  Hanging 4,391m up on a ridge having dropped one of his pair of ice axes, he's trapped on a sheet of blue ice.  Radio-ing down to the film crew he explains, 'I don't think you understand.  With only one ice axe there's no way I can get out of here'.  Follow Xavier through a whole season - includes a hair-raising four hour descent down one of the most mythical ski descents in Chamonix, the 3,700m Aiguille de Plan.

 

5.30pm Juliana Buhring: The Fastest Woman To Cycle the World
followed by Kadoma
 

On December 22, 2012, Juliana Buhring set the first ever Guinness World Record for Fastest Woman to Circumnavigate the World by Bicycle.  Juliana’s 18,060 mile journey took her across four continents and nineteen countries, in a total time of 152 days and 144 actual days pedaled.

'Kadoma' was a nickname for Hendri Coetzee, a legendary South African kayaker who had explored some of Africa’s wildest rivers. American pro kayakers Chris Korbulic and Ben Stookesbury followed Coetzee into the Democratic Republic of Congo for a first descent of the dangerous Lukuga River. Seven weeks into the expedition, tragedy struck.
      

8pm  Annie Last: Team GB Mountain Biker

Sheffield's 23 year old Annie Last (born in Bakewell) made her Olympic debut at the London 2012 Olympics, becoming the first woman to represent Team GB in the mountain bike event since Sydney 2000.  Annie will be talking to adventure sports journalist Nik Cook from British Cycling's 'Insight Zone'. 

'NotBad' is a tale of epic adventure. A tale of seven brave riders who set out from the four corners of the globe to gather together under one roof in a town located at the ends of the earth...30 days of bicycle tomfoolery in New Zealand'.

'Arrival' brings viewers into the reality of a new generation of freeriders and racers.  A new mountain cycling actu-mentary building on the success of Secondbase Films 2011 release 'From the Inside Out'

10.30am Young Adventurers 2 - Dave Cornthwaite - 'Say yes more'

Adventurer Dave Cornthwaite is a British adventurer, author and motivational speaker.  He has broken five world records, written three books and completed more expeditions than you have fingers since he gave up a graphic design job in 2005.  Shaped by a passion for combining sport and travel to encourage people to look after their own little corner of the planet by thinking big, staying healthy and smiling as much as possible, Dave's take on adventure is unique.  

Following Dave, we'll show a series of the best films from the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival's sell-out Young Adventurers' screening.  (The speakers and films have been selected mainly with primary school age in mind but we're confident that they will also be enjoyed by older children and adults too).  
 

12.30pm Heather Dawe: A Personal Obsession with Mountains
followed by The Dragon's Back
 

Ultra-runner, climber and cyclist and now author and artist Heather Dawe talks to Trail Running's Claire Maxted about her drive to keep pushing herself harder and harder.  Heather has competed and won at Elite level in many mountain marathons like the LAMM and the OMM and has run the Bob Graham Round in under 22 hours. In 2008 she won the renowned Three Peaks Cyclo-cross.          

One of the world's toughest running events, the original Dragon’s Back Race happened just once in September 1992.  Tracing the mountainous spine of Wales from Conwy Castle to Carreg Cennen Castle this incredible 5-day journey is approximately 320 kilometres long with 17,000 metres of ascent.  Follow the exploits of those who dared take on the even tougher 2012 course including all the 3,000 ft Welsh mountains on day one.
      

3pm  Jez Bragg: Running the Length of New Zealand
followed by The Road from Karakol & The Journey
   

Ultra-runner Jez Bragg successfully completed New Zealand’s arduous Te Araroa Trail, from top to bottom of both islands, in just 53 days - 9 days quicker than the previous record for running the length of the country.  The 3,054km route also involved Jez kayaking across the notoriously dangerous Cook Strait, 120km down the Whanganui River and numerous other river and estuary crossing over the course of the expedition.

The Road from Karakol: In the summer of 2011, alpinist Kyle Dempster set out across Kyrgyzstan’s back roads on his bike.  His goal – ride across the country via old Soviet roads while climbing as many of the region’s impressive peaks as possible - alone.

Paul Pritchard became disabled in 1998 during a climbing accident on a sea stack in Tasmania when a TV-sized boulder falling from 25 meters inflicted such terrible head injuries that doctors thought he might never walk or even speak again.   'The Journey' follows Paul and Carol Hurst as they ride over the Himalayas all the way to Mount Everest Base Camp.

 
5.30pm Rosie Swale Pope: The World's Longest Unsupported Run

Global Adventurer Rosie Swale-Pope is the only person in world history to have undertaken an epic solo, unsupported run around our world - over 20,000 miles facing extreme danger, bitter Siberian winters, wolves, axmen and desolate loneliness over nearly five years.  Her book 'Just a Little Run Around the World' is an international best-seller.

The Penguin Runner: In October 2013, South African scuba instructor Dave Chamberlain departed Walvis Bay, Namibia on a 2700km-unsupported run. On a liquid only diet and running with a pram containing a tent and sleeping bag amongst other things.

Celtman:  Greek athlete Leuteris Paraskeuas as he tackles the beauty and challenges of this epic event comprising a 3.8km swim in Loch Shieldaig, running 42km over two Munros finishing with a 202km ride on incredible Highland roads.
      

8pm Jason Lewis: Round the World by Human Power
followed by Valhalla
 

In 2007 adventurer, author and sustainability activist Jason Lewis became the first person to circumnavigate the Earth without using motors or sails.

He walked, cycled and inline skated across five continents, kayaking, swimming, rowing, and pedalling a boat across the rivers, seas, and oceans.

Valhalla is Sweetgrass Productions’ eagerly anticipated fourth ski/snowboard feature film.  The tale of one man’s search to rediscover the freedom of his youth.  Where do we find the freedom that time and wisdom stole away? Weaving narrative-driven style with award-winning, face-melting backcountry ski and snowboard cinematography; Valhalla is a vivid explosion of color, character, snow, and nostalgic soul.
