Running special at the Buxton Adventure Festival – 10th May

THE BUXTON Adventure Festival is holding a special running event, supported by Montane, on Wednesday, 10th May, at the Buxton Opera House Pavilion Arts Centre.
Weekend joggers through to hard-training competitors are set for an inspiring evening with the story of 1940s/50s revolutionary runner Emil Zátopek, told by journalist and author Richard Askwith.
Emil’s achievements on the track were unprecedented and his training revolutionary, leading to numerous Olympic medals, 18 world records and a six-year undefeated streak over 10,000m.
Long-distance dominator Marcus Scotney will also recall his own racing trials and success, from the demanding eight-day Cape Wrath Ultra to his numerous ultramarathon wins over the past eight years.
Buxton-based photographer Jimmy Hyland will present his inspiring film – Running Sucks – The Story of a Barefoot Runner – which follows fellow Buxton local Aleks Khasefi and explains why he goes shoeless on his long-distance running challenges.
Rounding off the mini-festival is an audio-visual presentation from Ourea Events, the organiser behind some of the UK’s finest off-road mountain running events.
Matt Heason, Buxton Adventure Festival Director, said: “Our running events have proved hugely popular in the past, selling out tickets quickly. There are so many inspiring stories packed into this one event that it’s already following suit, as we have a great community of runners in and around the Peak District, plus people are willing to travel from far and wide for an inspiring evening of adventurous entertainment.
“We have the 70-year-old boundary-smashing story of Emil Zátopek from professional storyteller Richard Askwith. Anyone into their trail running knows who Marcus Scotney is and we can’t wait to learn the secret behind his long-distance running success. We also have an entertaining and inspiring film from Aleks and stunning photography from Ourea Events.
