SAYLs Olympic Dream

With the Olympic Games less than 165 days away, a team of 18 young people from Sheffield are working hard to ensure that they will be there to experience the buzz of the Games as volunteers.  These young people are members of the Sheffield Academy of Young Leaders, a unique volunteering and leadership programme working to improve skills, develop qualities, raise aspirations and improve cohesion amongst young people aged 12-25 years. Since 2009, over 6000 hours of volunteering at major events, in schools and within the community have been committed by SAYLs members and every young person that has graduated through the programme has gone on to study at University. The team of 18 from SAYLs that will be going to Games recently secured their place as courtside assistants for Volleyball during an assessment day in London. However, the hard work does not stop here as before their dream of going to the Games can become a reality, they must raise the necessary funds to cover the cost of the 2 week trip to London. Raising the required funds presents a great challenge to the leaders, but one that all 18 young people have expressed a willingness and commitment to achieving. They have already planned numerous collections and themed nights. The team will be collecting donations towards their trip to the Olympic Games at the upcoming Sheffield Adventure Film Festival, so please look out for them and support their cause should you wish too (They will be wearing their bright red polo shirts).  With your support, the young leaders from Sheffield could be one step closer to steeping out on to the volleyball court at Earls Court during the Games. The team at SAYLs would like to thank all the organisers at SHAFF for giving us the opportunity to collect at the event.
