Like a Lion 'goes beyond skiing', Outdoors Magic
24th Nov 2011
Sheffield Adventure Film Festival judge and Outdoors Magic guest editor Nik Cook reviews the extraordinary ski doc, Like a Lion, showing at the Sheffield Showroom cinema at 20.15 on 29th November.
Nik writes: "Following the high-risk, high-adrenaline life of seven-time ESPN X-Games Gold medalist Tanner Hall, LIKE A LION is a film that goes beyond skiing, beyond action sports stardom, beyond the rock-star cliches to examine that special courage that allows the best of us to continually comeback from life’s toughest blows.
As one of the judges at ShAFF, I was lucky enough to see this film when we were deciding which films to show at the festival. It was unanimously received as one of the strongest films by all the judges but, at 90mins, was just too long to fit into the line-up. We decided then that it more than merited a standalone showing and here it is.
It’s definitely not a mindless “ski porn” flick and, although there is plenty of gnarly action, it delves so much deeper and genuinely shows the development, growing up and journey of a prodigious talent who’s catapulted into the limelight, given incredible opportunities, witnesses personal tragedy and achieves legendary status before he’s even out of his teens."
