NEW ShAFF ‘Single Shot’ Photography Competition
Plus Photography Exhibition including
PREMIERE OF Alex Ekins’ Wide Boyz stills
The 8th Sheffield Adventure Film Festival is celebrating the art of stills photography as well as the moving image with a brand new photography competition and exhibition, including the premiere of Alex Ekin’s Wide Boyz’ stills.
ShAFF Single Shot - one image, one winner, open to all.
Photographers - amateur or pro - have until February 11th to submit just one image on the theme of the Adventure and/or the Peak District (ideally both)
A panel of judges including renowned outdoor and adventure travel photographer Alex Ekins will select a shortlist of six which will then be judged by public vote at the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival Photography Exhibition at the Showroom/Workstation during the festival weekend (1-3 March). (Click here for how to enter & terms & conditions).
Dave Mycroft, Managing Editor of MyOutdoors, who is sponsoring both the exhibition and competition said: "ShAFF highlights the quality and range of adventure available to everyone in the area and is the perfect vehicle to introduce both new and experienced photographers with an adventurous eye to a wider audience. The Peak District gives so many opportunities for adventure right on the doorstep of a city. ShAFF is the natural home for a competition like this - with films and speakers on travel, exploration, extreme sports and the environment, an adventure really is what you make it."
"We wanted to restrict entries to one shot per photographer to level the playing field. A talented amateur or aspiring pro with that one magic shot will be able to able to compete with the experienced professional with a lifetime's portfolio. John and Alex are renowned photographers who will ensure standards are high. Having a public vote over the festival weekend will mean the competition is ultimately judged by real people looking at real, high quality printed stills with a real interest in adventure, voting purely on merit without lobbying."
Alex Ekins’ Wide Boyz Premiere
Top professional adventure and climbing photographer Alex Ekins will launch a unique exhibition at ShAFF with a World Premiere of photographs taken during the filming of the award winning 'Wide Boyz' film. Joining Pete Whittaker and Tom Randall on their tour of the USA and culminating in the first ascent of Century Crack, Alex Ekins recorded a fascinating insight into the ultra-specialized world off off-width crack climbing, capturing the brutality of the climbing and the emotion of success in stunning detail.
Presenting his Wide Boyz exhibition for the first time Alex Ekins says: “It was a tremendous privilege to accompany Pete and Tom on their two month tour of the Utah and Wyoming. After two years training in a Sheffield cellar they stunned the climbing world with fast ascents of the world’s hardest off-widths."
"Working in wild, beautiful and sometimes dangerous environments, I have tried to document the dedication, pain and suffering involved in jamming one’s body into brutal wide cracks.”
(The full length original Hot Aches 'Wide Boyz' film and Reel Rock Tour edit are both showing at ShAFF.)
Free Photography Exhibition
Our biggest ever adventure photography exhibition in the festival's 8 years will be free and will run for almost three weeks from 18th February until March 8th at the Workstation (next door to the Showroom Cinema) with prints available for purchase through the ShAFF kit sale and personal signing sessions by several photographers.
There will also be an exhibition of work from leading adventure photographer Lukasz Warzecha. (You can also watch two of Lucasz's Polished Project films 'Echoes' and 'Dave' which will be screened as part of the film festival).
Alongside Ekins and Warzecha the exhibition will also feature a return by Dan Lane who exhibited last year and debut ShAFF exhibitions by Andy Leader, Stewart Smith, Nadir Khan and Mat Robinson.
